Texas’s Frisco In Brandon Aubrey’s situation, the number appears absurd and plausible at the same time.
a field goal of 70 yards.
Aubrey is the only kicker in NFL history to start a career with 13 consecutive field goals from 50 yards or more in his first 19 games with the Dallas Cowboys.
Last season, he made a 60-yarder against the Philadelphia Eagles. In an August preseason game, he made a 66-yarder against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium that hit well into the net.
After comfortably hitting a 57-yarder in the season opener against the Cleveland Browns, he later completed a 66-yarder that would have matched the all-time record of the Baltimore Ravens’ Justin Tucker, but it was wiped out by a delay-of-game penalty.
Despite the five-yard penalty, the Cowboys seriously considered giving him a try from 71 yards late in the first half before opting against it.
“I think it just shows you how good Brandon is,” said punter Brian Anger, who is Oubre’s holder. “He has incredible ability. He’s already proven that. He made two 66s, and he had a lot of space. That’s something we never really expect. I’ve come back from 60 twice in my career, just holding on, but those are huge accomplishments, and now we’ve made two 66-yarders this year, and that’s nothing.”
“Now, 50 yards out, we’re just going out there, and it almost feels like a chip shot. But it’s not. Every kick is tough, especially in the wind in Cleveland. That end zone we were kicking in, I don’t think that kick was too great, and he hit it just right, and to make room.” On Sunday, Oubre will compete against Tucker when the Ravens (0-2) face the Cowboys (1-1) at AT&T Stadium (4:25 p.m. ET, Fox). They met in last year’s Pro Bowl, where Tucker won the kick-tac-toe competition among kickers.
Oubre’s February flight to Orlando, Florida, was late that day, so the start of the competition was delayed, “so he might be a little frustrated with me out there,” Oubre said with a laugh. “We talked. He’s a great guy. He’s been successful in the league, so he’s doing something right.”
On September 26, 2021, inside Detroit’s Ford Field, Tucker broke the NFL record for the longest field goal, defeating the Lions 17–16. One day, Aubrey wants to surpass Tucker’s achievement.
“Anytime you can get your name in the record books, it’s pretty fun,” Aubrey stated. “So, any way I can do that would be awesome.”
ESPN Research reports that there have been seven field goal attempts of 70 yards or more since 1960. The last attempt was in 2021 when Brandon McManus of the Denver Broncos tried a 70-yard pass against the Raiders, but it was blocked.
Coach Mike McCarthy refrained from attempting the 71-yard field goal against Cleveland due in part to the presence of Browns cornerback Denzel Ward behind the goal posts, who may potentially return the ball in case of a short kick.
McCarthy’s thoughts wandered to Soldier Field in 2005, when he was a member of the San Francisco 49ers, when Joe Nedney’s 52-yard pass into the wind fell incomplete, with Nathan Vasher returning it 108 yards for a touchdown.
Sebastian Janikowski attempted a short field goal from 76 yards out, and the Raiders had special teams coach John Fassel as an assistant. After a 26-yard return, Antonio Cromartie was stopped, but Fassel claimed the Raiders lost their starting center to an injury sustained while attempting to cover the kick.
Oubre doesn’t particularly practice deep field goals.
“From there, practicing creates bad habits,” Aubrey said. “In games, you have a little more energy, so it carries a little further. If I go back and start practicing a 70-yard field goal, my ball flight is a little lower. I’ll be a little more aggressive on the ball and start to lose my consistency.”
“You connect it to a game of golf where you try to hit your driver, try to pipe a 300-plus-yard drive, you’re going to get confused because you’re changing your technique a little bit,” Ainge said.
If the Cowboys have any limits on Aubrey’s distance, they’re not saying. There are factors, such as whether the game is indoor or outdoor in a stadium and the wind direction. Score and time are also factors.
“I don’t know if I want to give you numbers or not so other teams don’t use it against us,” Fassel said. “But it’s going to be a pretty significant distance that I’m not used to.”
However, a 70-yarder?
The All-Pro wide receiver CeeDee Lamb remarked, “We with it.”
You as well, Dak Prescott?
The QB remarked, “I’d give him 75, especially indoors.” Yes, that is insane. I don’t take anything for granted; it’s a blessing.”
When asked what number just seems absurd to him, Aubrey responds in the negative.
“Field goal-wise?” stated Aubrey. “I’d say anything north of 75 yards sounds pretty crazy.”
