Rain in South Florida: More than a foot of rain fell on South Florida on Wednesday, leaving many areas flooded. Fort Lauderdale Airport was flooded again. The airport was so flooded that the roads and taxiways around the terminal looked more like lakes than any kind of transportation hub.
Fort Lauderdale Airport also flooded:
Heavy rains caused by a tropical disturbance in South Florida on Wednesday (June 12) caused flash floods in many areas. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport was also not untouched by this and it also got submerged. Many flights were affected due to waterlogging at the airport.
According to Fox Weather, the tropical disturbance was capable of producing rainfall at rates of 4-6 inches per hour, causing flooding around Broward and Miami-Dade on Wednesday, including at the airport.

According to reports, the airport was flooded with so much water during the torrential rains that taxiways and roads around the terminal resembled lakes rather than a transport hub. Although Wednesday’s incident was not as dramatic as the one witnessed at the airport during the historic rains of 2023, water still flooded entry and exit gates, and dozens of flights had to be cancelled.
Due to rain, the movement of aircraft on the runway was stopped
Rich Beeson was one of many passengers stranded during the downpour and decided to take video and photos of the scene from the terminal. Beeson’s photos showed vehicles driving through water that National Weather Service meteorologists warned was too high for travel. Airplane traffic on runways was nearly halted because the storm was so heavy the system couldn’t handle it. Other airports in South Florida were also impacted.
The city received about a foot of rain on Wednesday, and more is expected, an official weather site reported. Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis declared a state of emergency due to the flooding, just hours after a flash flood emergency was issued for Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
The National Hurricane Center said that people have been asked to stay safe. Similar weather is expected in the future as well. Not only this, the Miami Weather Service has also issued a warning.
