The majority of the New York Rangers’ roster is set to begin training camp for the 2024-25 campaign. Still, there are a few seats or two that are vacant. It will be up to players like Matt Rempe to work hard during the summer and get ready for opening night.
While a spot is not yet confirmed, coach Peter Laviolette believes the impact Rempe made on the team last season, combined with the hard work he put in during the offseason, is a good thing.
He put in a lot of hard work this summer. “He had a huge impact on our team last year,” Laviolette explained in a press conference this week. “He’s a young kid coming into training camp. A lot of players want more out of their game, but this young guy has put a lot of effort into creating more of a physical presence through skating, stickhandling, and game participation.
“You look forward to seeing those improvements come in camp now because that’s what you love to see.”

The Rangers have a ton of players vying for a spot on the fourth line, while others like Brennan Othmann will compete for a slot among the top nine forwards. Rempe, Adam Edstrom, Jimmy Vesey, Sam Carrick, and Jonny Brodzinski are a few of them.
Even though Edstrom had an excellent rookie camp and scored three goals in two games against the Philadelphia Flyers rookies, Rempe had a significant impact on the squad following his late-season callup.
Rempe has been pretty busy this offseason. Living with Jonathan Quick and training with Chris Kreider has been an incredibly valuable experience for the 22-year-old forward — not just from a training standpoint, but also because of the experience Quick and Kreider have. Rempe has probably learned a lot about what it takes to be a successful NHL player, and it’s more than just throwing his 6-foot-8 frame around.
That doesn’t mean he’ll be wearing gloves all season. Rempe also trained with longtime NHL enforcer Georges Laraque in the offseason — so maybe we’ll see some more technicality in his fighting game, not just throwing haymakers during fights.
If Rempe is to play a bigger role, he’ll have to prove to Laviolette and the rest of the Rangers staff that the non-fighting aspects of his game have improved. He’s not going to help the team by playing five minutes every night. In fact, his average career ice time is just 5:37. Rempe scored a goal and an assist in 17 regular-season games, while accumulating 71 penalty minutes. He scored a goal with 10 PIM in 11 playoff games for the Rangers.

Matt Rempe will have a chance, but Laviolette stated that a roster berth is not a given.
Laviolette remarked, “I believe there’s always room inside of a training camp.” “This is an opening. Today’s message: Welcome to training camp. You always have the chance to step out of your shoes, give us a hard headshake, and declare, “I am here.” I’ve reached my destination. From there, it forces us to consider every aspect of the circumstance.
“Those who are willing to break down doors and make a fuss are good to have inside an organization,” the author said.
Focus: Matt Rempe joined the Rangers camp after an offseason where he has improved significantly. While players like Brennan Othman will fight for a spot in the top nine forwards, the Rangers have several players competing for a spot on the fourth line. These include Rempe, Adam Edstrom, Jimmy Vesey, Sam Carrick, and Johnny Brodzinski.
